Hi all,

I have been building docs with a team that seems to like bells and
whistles and we are using a score of custom directives from various
projects. It turns out that these directives tend to be broken with
sphinx trunk, and they tend to be mutually exclusive (I haven't really
understood what is going on under the hood, though). As a result I think
we are in 'sphinx extension mess' :).

This e-mail is a plea to merge in directives that are of general use and
do not drag in external dependencies. This will that the authors of the
sphinx extensions will need to get them to sphinx's quality standards,
and I do understand that this is more work, but it is really a pitty to
be in a situation where you can't build the docs under sphinx trunk, and
you have to cherry pick directives.

In particular, I have in mind the autosummary directive, and the
only_directive. Both are all over the place in different projects.
Autosumary has been discussed here, only_directive can be found by
googling, but for a quick view, here is an URL:
https://networkx.lanl.gov/trac/browser/networkx/branches/pre99/doc/sphinxext/only_directives.py?rev=876

In general, it would be great if people could contribute their custom
extensions to sphinx and discuss them on this mailing list.

Cheers,

Gaƫl
