OK, I indeed looked only at Firefox' status bar, which already unescaped the address. Reading RFCs 1738 and 2368, it looks to me like the escaping of characters in mailto: URIs is fully legal (and indeed required for characters such as "%" or linebreaks in addresses or headers).
