FWIW -- it was indeed a reincarnation of 
bugs.debian.org/611078
and patch 
http://patch-tracker.debian.org/patch/series/view/sphinx/1.1.2+dfsg-4/initialize_autodoc.diff
present in Debian's 1.1.2+dfsg-4 revision resolved it
