I thought you wanted a captial Greek letter Sigma, but now I realize that
the character in question is a summation sign.
Mathematical characters should be input using the TeX syntax, in this case
:math:`\sum` in running text and
.. math::
\sum
in a display formula. This should work for LaTeX and HTML output.
