I see the following keyword, which should do the job I want - to 
selectively include information based on the target being built

Including content based on tags 
<http://sphinx-doc.org/markup/misc.html#including-content-based-on-tags>.. 
only:: <expression> <http://sphinx-doc.org/markup/misc.html#directive-only>

Include the content of the directive only if the *expression* is true.
