Hi. I noticed that I can create links that will break during a local build but will work once the target is included in the *.inv file for intersphinx linking. For example, if I add an anchor above text that's not a heading like this:
.. _MyAnchor: **Not a Section Heading** A cross-reference to :ref:`MyAnchor` will fail with WARNING: undefined label because the anchor is not preceding a section header (I'm using bold text). I'm also using intersphinx linking for the documents I'm working with. It turns out that once the documents are published on Read the Docs, link anchors like this will work. When does Sphinx generate the .inv database of link targets? Is it possible that intersphinx accepts the anchor above this text but normal Sphinx link processing does not? I've read the http://www.sphinx-doc.org/en/stable/ext/intersphinx.html doc, and I'd like to understand more of the technical details during publishing. Does anyone have a good link to share? Thanks!
