Aha - the problem is that I changed the footer and removed the phrase that references |today|. PEBKAC.
But I also realize now that having this in the footer is not going to do what I wanted - I need to add a "last updated" date to each individual file if I want to track when I updated each file on the website. That is, if I build all the files on 8/17, the |today| dates will all say 8/17, but if I only upload the changed files to the website, I could have some that say 8/17 and some that say 8/4 or whatever earlier date it was when I built them. The footer will just show the date when the footer was built. Thanks for your help, it was good to eliminate the syntax as the source of the error.
