Perhaps I wasn't clear in my paragraph beginning "I got a little further", 
but I was describing how I tried just what you suggest. I get 
"ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'graphite'" and there is a 
graphite.py file in themedir/graphite. 

I just added the themedir/graphite directory to my $PYTHONPATH and then it 
worked.
