I agree with Joe on this one, those units are big, especially when you
include the inboard discs for brakes.

If one is having troubles with the sliding joint that is currently
required to adjust for the differing shaft lengths at the various
positions of suspension travel, a CV joint might be best suited.  These
adjust on front wheel drive cars just fine.  

If part of the notion is to eliminate the rather fragile differential,
cut down american differentials are available from various circle track
racing supply companies.  Mazda and Subaru differentials have also been
fitted with good success.

For reworking the entire rear suspension, Tim at GRMS did just that on
his RotoSpit.  You could contact him and ask him about it.  He's in the
office today, and fussing about playing again with the RotoSpit, or some
other similar project.  So you'd probably get lots of information on
that custom suspension they built for the RotoSpit.
