I had occasion once to make a 300 mile (450km) trip one hot summer day with my son in the passenger seat and the dog behind the seats. It was too hot to swelter in the sun, so the top was up. Unfortuneatly, the angle of the back window (although unzipped) meant that the poor dog did receive direct sunlight most of the ride. This is probably more unhealthy for a dog than us (mostly) humans.
If you're going to travel extensively with a dog in hot weather, you might want to arrange for some sort of shade. My .02.
