Check the voltage regulator first.  With a volt meter you can do a few 
quick checks to see if the regulator or generator is giving you 
trouble.  If it's the regulator, then you can adjust it usually. If it's 
the generator, you'll need a replacement or convert to an alternator.

visited pages on my site- it's been discovered by early gas engine tractor 
enthusiasts who use the same voltage regulator setups.
