A few weeks ago I decided to convert from the stock Stromberg carb to a 1.75 inch SU HIF-6. Well, it's done and I thought I would share the results. The car definitely runs much stronger, even with the stock exhaust and really seems to get up on the cam now. I think a freer flowing exhaust would definitely give even greater improvements. The gas mileage seems to be about the same (I have never gotten better than 26 mpg on the highway with the Stromberg), the car starts instantly and has much better acceleration. The top end was increased by about 5 mph bringing the tops speed to 96 mph. The conversion is easy and the best part for me is that you can keep all your emissions equipment if you need to. The stock manifold is machined to accept the larger carb and all the emissions lines connect right up. If you need to, you can switch back to your original carb in 15 minutes. The only thing I haven't done is make am air cleaner to fit the new carb, so that I can use the warm air inlet. I am currently running a K&N air filter with a stub stack. If anyone wants more details let me know. I think that I have mine tuned pretty well, it's not burning the valves or fouling the plugs, no smoke etc., so I think that the needle is at least in the ball park. I also have a second rebuilt HIF-6 and a modified manifold for sale if anyone is interested.
