You have the wrong part. This is a constant source of confusion. Many vendors do not understand that there are two different parts, which are basically mirror images of each other.
I have heard that you can take apart the valve and use the new cast portion (and rubber, of course) with your original stamped portion that is the correct type. But I would try to get the correct part first. I belive older Spits had it one way, and the MK IVs and 1500s used the "opposite" valve. Also note that almost all factory parts books and catalogs show the valve installed upside down. This is wrong- and it is impossible to do with the correct part.
