As to specific elan problems, I have been monitoring an elan list (call me a trator!), and appart from the lack of rust woes, most of the problems are the same as here. There have already been length threads on why the clutch hydraulics are a pain, which brake fluid to use, how to get the pistons out of brake calipers without killing someone etc... And BTW the concensus seems to be oil/grease mix in the trunions
