How about an added bit of circuitry to give you 3-4 wipes of the screen when you use the washer, like modern cars have?
Richard & Daffy P.S. when I used to own an MG BGT about 5 years ago I recall the MG Owners Club sold similar devices (one to give intermittent wipe, one to do the washer thing too) for MGBs and Midgets, in the UK. I guess this could also be adapted for use in the Spitfire.
