The effective place to mount the cat is as near to the exhaust manifold as possible. 
It need the heat to cause the chemical change over to a cleaner exhaust gas. If you 
have an air pump and hook it into an air inlet the extra O2 will cause an even cleaner 
exhaust. The further away from the heat source the less effective the cat will be. 
That's functionality.
As far as fit goes, there is more room back near the rear axel for fit purposes. Up 
near the front you will ave to check clearances. You run the risk of fire if not  It 
all depends on the cat you use. Mine was a small flatish one that I installed in the 
rear. My year spit didn't visually require a cat to pass but it needed it for the 
sniffer test to pass.
