Sounds like you've either got it wired up wrong, or you've got a problem with your ignition switch. Here's a wiring diagram of the 10Si Delco alternator http://mightymo.org/public_html/images/Projects/DelcoOneWire/DelcoSI.jpg Notice that he charging light needs to be able to see the positive connection with the battery through the ignition switch in order to have a circuit. If you reversed the #1 and #2 connectors, you could cause the lighting problem you describe I believe.
