Mike, On the 'hunting' thing, I'd be inclined to suspect an air leak in the intake system somewhere. Suspects could be the throttle shaft where it goes into the carb - the carb housing can get worn after 25 years or so, and create a gap for air to leak in. Also carb-manifold gaskets and manifold-head gasket. There is some trick about spraying carb cleaner at the suspect area and seeing if the revs rise, but I've never tried that myself.
