You might also look at the Switching Regulators on National's Webench. Since they are switchers, they run very cool, even at high current/voltage drop. You can enter the operating input voltage range, current and output voltage range and test it online. Once you get it looking the way you want it, you can order the kit online. They send you all the parts and a little PC card.
