Bill, That probably has a lot to do with that high lift cam that doesn't like to idle below about 2000 rpm! :)

This was on a newly rebuilt engine with everything set to specs. I always richened the mixture and advanced the timing to get it to run OK after the test. If you remove the air pump and air rail it will run great and not backfire. I would leave the catalytic converter on because it didn't seem to create any drivability problems.
