I have the same problem on my passenger side. One of my original ideas was the same idea of puting in a bar of some sort to hold it straight. I will just try a little muscle work ato bend it back for the time being before i paint it. I always open my bonnet from the middle.

My guess is that this is why I was told not to lift the bonnet by the latch. It's a poor bit of design really because the latch really is the obvious thing
to use to lift that heavy bonnet.
