BTDT, exactly the same problem. I'm 6'2". I too used Paul's method, which seemed to me to place the seats as low as they could go. In they end they were too high for me, and I found myself looking through the top couple of inches of the windscreen while driving. With either soft or hard top fitted my hair brushed the roof.
I learned to put up with it, but I was never really happy with it, and if I could go back in time I would not do it again. As well as the features you noticed which raise the Mazda seats compared to the stock seats (thicker bases, higher seat rails), you will see that, on the original seats, the bottom of the base is actually slightly lower than the rails, taking advantage of a slight recess in the floor between the rails. On the Mazda seats the base of the seat is well above the rail height. In short, the original Spitfire seats are optimised to the shape of the Spitfire floor; the Mazda seats are not. The Mazda seats are basically good, offer much better lateral support than the stock seats, and are more comfortable than stock seats that have lost much of their foam - but I'd only suggest them to anyone who was 5'10" or less. I have seen seats sold for kit cars that have much thinner bases, and may work better - a company in the UK called Cobra sells several designs. But my preference would probably be to re-build and re-cover the original seats.
