Does it get enough sleep? Have you hugged it lately? Could it be that it just wants attention? All seriousness aside though, are you sure it is the diff? Does it have much free play? If you're willing to go through the trouble to remove it you can pull the output shafts from the sides then take the pumpkin off the back end to examine the interior without doing anything else mechanical.
