I built a similar sort of thing for holding a Ford
Model A sedan body.  I found that 2x4s were plenty
strong enough.  No need to spend extra money and time
to make a fancy metal thing.  If you use 2x4s,
you can just cut it up and put it in the fireplace
when you are done.
