Thanks to everyone who responded to my clutch question. It had not occurred to me that it could be a thrust washer problem. That sounds frightening but maybe easier to fix. So...
Let me guess. This might show up as a forward movement of the crank pulley when the clutch is depressed. To check further or fix, I drop the oil pan to gain access to the crank from below. What will I see? How big are these mythical thrust washers? At which end of the crank (if they're not in the oil pan)? Is the replacement procedure reasonably obvious? I've never done anything like this before. At least not on this sort of car and not in the last 30 years.
