Sounds like where I got stuck on gearbox disassembly when I did it on my '79. 
What I got stuck on was there was that little chuck key thing you can hammer 
out(ie "with a suitable drift") and then the mainshaft bearing can be removed. 
I think that chuck key thing is what keeps one of the gears still, or at least 
prevents it from sliding off(thus being able to remove it).
