The inner shaft of the steering column (the part that actually turns) is telescoping, and in the middle there is a clamp that holds the two pieces together. If that is loose, there will be some slop in the steering wheel, because there will be some play between the two pieces.
Do you have a repair manual for the Spitfire? If not, the Haynes manual is pretty good (but not so good for the anti-pollution stuff on the later year cars.)
