I like Debian, I find it easier to understand then Ubuntu and more powerful. (I use the command line a great deal more than the desktop, but I running Gnome, and it works ok). With Ubuntu I kept having incompatibility issues with pre-built packages and ended up having to compile form source more often than I would like. I have had far fewer issues with Debian.
