This is necessary since there are pins in the rear brake pads, at least on the stock 
ones.  The pins I am talking about are on the outside of the pads in
the middle-bottom.  The cut-out area of the X of the rear caliper piston should go 
around the pin.  If the cut-out areas are to the sides (parallel to
the ground), then the piston will only be in contact with the "pin" on the pad.  This 
will cause some severely uneven wear and will use the pad up in a
very short period of time.  Trust me, I know from experience.  If you look at the rear 
pads and caliper piston you will see what I mean.
