Hi Everyone:

Initially, I had difficulties understanding how an amateur--even a very
smart one--could generate Sam's data transmission (the "buzz").

Clearly, it is some form of QAM variant (PSK and AM combined), as it shows
amplitude, frequency, and phase variations. These protocols are very hard
to generate cleanly with PC software, and do not lend themselves to the
venue of amateur SWL hackers.

QAM usually is used with wireless and ADSL protocols, along with television.
It is not widely used on SW, unless by government.

But then I realized that "advanced-looking QAM" can be generated with
hardware such as a newer dial-up modem. Eureka! Just bring up a low baud
modem session over V.35, and a capacitance tap to your sound card, and it
looks like an advanced SW protocol, much like the Russian 93-tone OFDM.

If this is a SWL hacker, he is very ingenious indeed!

Perhaps we should institute a yearly "Varmint" holiday in his/her honor?

Dave :-)
