Hi JR:
Welcome to the Spooks List.
The CW station above is one of the many Cuban M8a (Enigma Designation)
stations to be heard each day.
The sked is a regular Thursday 0400z sked on 9062m. It is a repeat of
0300z at 10344m.
The characters you heard were cut numbers. The Cuban cut numbers are as
follows:
A = 1, N = 2, D = 3, U = 4, W = 5, R = 6, I = 7, G = 8,
M = 9, and T = 0.
As you can see, the Cubans cut all ten numerals. The only letters that
M8a sends in their transmissions are:
BT, AR and SK.
If you do a search in the Spooks Database, you can find current sked
times and freqs for other M8a's as well as the voice counterpart V2a's.
Be aware, the Cubans are very lax in their broadcast practices, and
sometimes come up late, in the middle of a message without callups, with an
open microphone so you hear people talking in the background, but no sked
being broadcast and many other errors that must drive the signals officer
crazy. Not too mention the intended recipient of the messages.
