I've always heard this referred to as a "clip test." Dave Cohen discussed
what it is; a way to critically monitor exposure and processing for best
results by processing a short bit of film from an roll.
Clip tests are most often used on movie shoots (such as Batman) where
directors are trying to achieve a specific look, or to confirm tricky
lighting situations. It's also used for model shoots where a photography
wants to confirm the exposure of tricky lighting.
About the only use I can think of for railfanning is do discover an exposure
error before processing an entire load of film from a trip. Once I clip
tested a roll of black and white film found in an old Bob Collins camera that
had been in there 30 years. There were no images on it, unfortunately.
