09/24/97

Welcome to the SPORRS mailing list!

NOTICE:

PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING TEXT IN ITS ENTIRETY.
BY ACCEPTING RECEIPT OF THIS INFO FILE AND THE
CONFIRMATION OF SUBSCRIPTION TO THE SPORRS LIST
MESSAGE, YOU ARE EXPECTED TO HAVE KNOWLEDGE OF
AND ABIDE BY THE FOLLOWING SPORRS LIST RULES
WHETHER YOU CHOOSE TO READ THEM IN THEIR ENTIRETY
OR NOT. THIS POLICY IS INTENDED FOR THE BENEFIT OF ALL
OF ITS RULE ABIDING SUBSCRIBERS. THANK YOU FOR
REVIEWING THIS FILE IN ADVANCE.

ABOUT THIS FILE:
This file has been redesigned to make it easier to use. Please print out a

copy now and keep it handy for reference.

THE BASICS:

WHAT IS SPORRS?:
SPORRS is an acronym for Serious Photographers Of Railroad Related
Subjects. The SPORRS list is the ideal place to discuss railroad
photography and your related railfan adventures!

SPORRS PURPOSE:
A place for serious photographers of railroad subjects to talk about
issues related to railfanning and taking pictures of trains. If you have
a question or contribution about film, processing, technique, digital
photography, camera equipment, or other railfan gear, SPORRS is
the perfect place to post. You can post the results of your latest RR
trip and shoot, and let everyone know how you did. The SPORRS
theme is basically anything that is related to photographing trains.
Please use your best judgment in accordance with this list's policy.

FOR NEWS RELATED TO RAILROADING:
Post your RR news to Foamer instead of SPORRS. Foamer is
another automated mailing list that runs in a similar manner to
SPORRS. Foamer is dedicated to substantiated railroad industry
news. Please do NOT post photographic related topics to Foamer;
that's what SPORRS is for.

FOR MORE INFORMATION ON THE FOAMER NEWS LIST:
send a message to '[EMAIL PROTECTED]'
with the words 'info foamer' in the body of the message.

HOW DOES SPORRS WORK?:
When you post your message to the SPORRS List, it is automatically
and electronically redistributed by a list server program directly back
to the mailboxes of all of the subscribed members of the SPORRS list.
Do NOT use the SPORRS List for personal E-mail.

SPORRS, like Foamer, is currently an OPEN list, which means anyone
can subscribe. We do ask that you abide by these SPORRS list rules
and use proper list etiquette so that all SPORRS members can benefit
from a quality service.

Also note that you MUST be a subscriber of SPORRS to post a
message to it. This is intended to keep spammers out. One side
effect of this is that you cannot post from a different account than
you subscribe from. The same is also true of the Foamer list.

ABOUT POSTING TO MORE THAN ONE LIST:
DO NOT post a message to both Foamer and SPORRS. This
would be inappropriate because each list has a different theme, and
many people subscribe to both lists.

CAN I REPOST A SPORRS POST ONTO AN INTERNET NEWS
GROUP?:
NO. This is a violation of the subscription rules, as above, and by
posting the SPORRS address to another list, you would be increasing
the odds that a spammer will pick it up with a 'search and strip'
program used to collect E-mail addresses which will then be provided
to a multitude of criminals with knowledge of list server programs and
the ill-intent of gaining unauthorized access to the SPORRS List
specifically to fill our mailboxes with undesirable advertising junk mail.

WHY CAN'T I POST JUNK I FIND ON OTHER INTERNET LISTS
OR NEWSGROUPS LIKE 'CUNY' ON THE SPORRS LIST?:
Because the SPORRS members don't want it here. If we want to read
those lists, we will read them ourselves, on our own. SPORRS is
original material from and for its members only. Sorry, no exceptions.
This policy will be strictly enforced.

WHAT CAN I POST?:
You may post anything relevant to photography of trains. Please use
 this file as a guide.

ABOUT SENDING CC: CARBON COPIES FOR REPLIES:
You do NOT need to copy (CC:) a message to someone who is already
on the list, as they will receive your posting directly from the list. If
you received their list posting, then this means that they are ALREADY
on the list as a subscriber. This also means that anyone that you CC: in
your replies WILL get TWO identical copies of your reply message.
This is not necessary, and it quickly fills member's mailboxes with
twice the amount of files that they should have received, it wastes
Internet bandwidth, slowing down everyone's messages and there is
no reason to reply to each message TWICE. If you wish to send a
personal reply as well to a list member that has posted a message to
the list, then return to your original mail message in your 'IN' or
'INCOMING' mailbox and just click on 'reply' again to send them a
separate reply message. They will greatly appreciate it at that point
if you edit out any non-related text that they themselves just wrote
and already have a copy of.

SHOULD I EDIT MY REPLIES BEFORE I SEND THEM TO
THE SPORRS LIST?:
Yes. Please edit (delete) any text content that is not relevant to your
reply. If you don't, you are just wasting space and filling our mail
boxes with something that all of us have already read the first time.

WHY IS MY REPLY MESSAGE ADDRESSED TO THE
ORIGINAL SENDER INSTEAD OF THE SPORRS LIST WHEN I
CLICK ON 'REPLY'?:
This eliminates the possibility of accidentally sending a potentially
embarrassing personal E-mail response to the SPORRS List for
redistribution to us all. I suggest making an address entry in your
mailer software's Address Book to make it easy to address mail that
you intend to post on the SPORRS List.

I POSTED IT, WHERE IS IT?:
Due to the nature of the Internet, mail distribution time varies from
message to message. There are many factors involved. Chances are, if you
haven't seen your posting come back yet, at least some of the other
subscribers have. Be patient. Most postings go through almost instantly,
but some of mine have taken hours. Additionally, If you change your
Internet Provider (IP) and E-mail address, please unsubscribe first. And
DO NOT attempt to post to the SPORRS List from a different address than
which you are subscribed with. Your mail bounces when this happens, and
the two friendly guys mentioned below get to clean up your mess.

A NOTE FROM DAVE AND JIM:
Please feel free to tell all your friends about SPORRS. All we ask is
that when posting to SPORRS, please try to keep topics somehow
related to the SPORRS theme and try to be courteous and respectful
of others.

THE SPORRS LIST USAGE RULES:

1) DO NOT re-post or redistribute material from SPORRS without
the express written permission of the material's author. Copyright
notices and any messages labeled 'Do not redistribute' 'Do not
forward' or labeled in any way similar mean just that: NO FURTHER
USE OF THAT MESSAGE WITHOUT THE AUTHOR'S WRITTEN
PERMISSION. PERIOD. Respect any and all copyrights.

2) NO cross-posting of messages allowed to or from SPORRS and
any other list in any manner. DO NOT post material to SPORRS that
was intended for another type of list.

3) For liability reasons, we cannot allow commercially advertised
items for sale on SPORRS. Posting personal photographic
equipment for sale IS permitted for the other list members'
convenience only. Please, no on-list bidding; take these matters
to personal E-mail.

4) Do not post file attachments or binaries to SPORRS. The server
cannot redistribute file attachments to e-mail.

5) Use of proper and respectable list etiquette is required.

We are pleased to bring you this list, and we hope you enjoy it. This
list exists for all of us. Thanks!

Sincerely,

Dave Cohen, SPORRS List Founder & Director
Jim Gilley, List Administrator
