While we've just about beaten this subject to death, let me add my five cents' worth.
Like a number of others, I have been simply fascinated by this discussion on railfans' getting paid for the publication of their images in the fanzines. Last November, Railpace published a photo I'd taken at an annual railroad event. The image, of Morristown & Erie SW1500 no. 20, appeared on page 29 of that issue. Like many others, I would have LOVED to have received a monetary sum as compensation; the magazine's policy on contributions is to send the contributor a free copy of the issue in which the picture appeared. Just the same, I got a big kick out of it. Will I likely consider submitting photographs to the fanzines in the future? Yes, but I'll look for ones that offer a monetary compensation to at least offset the cost of the film. An aside to this. A pro photog I know as a casual acquaintance, once asked me to help cover for him on a photo shoot for an organization in my town (the job was for no pay, but, IMHO, valuable for experience). I had to decline due commitments at my full-time job (it mandatory that I help with inventory.) Nevertheless, I was flattered that he thought of me, in spite of one minor detail: He has NEVER seen my work. Dieter --> SPORRS: Serious Photographers of Railroad Related Subjects
