As strange as it may sound (and I learned this from a fellow employee at
the Keokuk Junction Railway), one of the best types of relief I've found
for poison ivy is to take a shower, and then apply bleach to the affected
area using a paper towel. Let it dry, of course, before putting on any
clothing covering the area. It smells bad, but it takes the itch away
better than anything else I've tried (and I've suffered from this allergy
for as long as I can remember).

Of course the best prevention is to be able to recognize the plant and the
areas where it may grow, and head in the opposite direction when you sense
it. I find that staying in the city most of the time helps.  :)
