Dave,
I for one would like to speak out in favor of having only the
thumbnails load and then having the larger JPG files load as we (or *if*
we) click on the thumbnails. My reasons for this are twofold:
1) I have only a 14.4 modem. Yes, I know you'll all tell me to
upgrade, but I'm a poor college student(sob) and use my modem only for
emailing and the occasional web visit. This page loads slower than
almost any other I've seen.
2) I keep my cache file small and clean it out almost regularly.
Even then, Netscape will clear the cache occasionally. This means that
if I visit the page after a cache purge it will take the same long time
to load as it did originally. Naturally, I haven't had this happen yet,
but I can envision the wait in a couple of months after the page has
grown (of course, it WILL grow!)
I guess what's puzzling to me is that the SPORRS page is the only
page I've encountered so far that has the entire image file load at the
same time the thumbnail loads.
BUT, I think all of us owe Dave a huge debt of gratitude for the
work he has put into this, and also the work that he is planning to do in
the future. It's easy to criticize, but much harder to actually DO
something about it (which also echoes what Busse says about publications.)
A little constructive criticism, but otherwise a GREAT job.
