I never met Benson, but I greatly admired his work. I own copies of both his railroad books have given a copy of one as a present to a friend. Benson, as much as anyone, is probably responsible for my interest in the Powder River Basin (PRB) -- from photos in his books and from the landmark article (with text by Fred Frailey) in the Nov. 1989 issue of Trains. I've carried a photocopy of that article with me on each of my three trips to the Powder River Basin. Documentation of the PRB has turned into an ongoing project, and I'm sure I'll make additional trips there in the future -- again taking along my photocopy of that article. When an electric utility magazine recently used one of my PRB shots as a full-bleed two-page spread, I even thought to myself that this was a photo that even Benson would have been proud of. As someone who pays attention to bylines and credit lines, I had noticed that there hadn't been any Benson photos published lately. I'm very sorry to hear of Benson's death.
