It was Malden, Mo., 1990, and I was wearing a well-worn Domke vest which I have since replaced. I was shooting video for Pentrex, following SSW 819 from Pine Bluff to St. Louis, enroute to the NRHS convention. At nearly every stop, people would see sound man and me with Betacam, heavy tripod, audio gear, etc., and ask what TV station we were from. At Malden just north of the Arkansas border, a kid and his mom walked across the street as I was setting up the tripod. "Hey mom, I think they're from TV," the kid says out loud. Mom looks at us, ragged and weary from a long day of chasing, covered with sweat and road dirt and says, in a Southeast Missouri twang audible to everyone around: "Naaaah, them's just surveyors from the highway department." --DRB -> SPORRS: Serious Photographers of Railroad Related Subjects -> Web Site: http://www.anet-stl.com/acphotog/sporrs
