OK, we have discussed the essentials for your camera bag, now how about a
list of some non-essential (but still important) things to have in your
camera bag?

In no particular order...

1. parachute cord

2. heavy duty needle and thread

3. first aid kit and snake bite kit

4. compass

5. spare everything (front and rear lens caps, camera body cap, synch
cord, cable
release, batteries, hand-held light meter, skylight filter, etc.)

6. mosquito net for hat

7. insect repellant lotion (stored in a plastic bag to prevent leakage)

8. gray card (gray cloth as suggested by Mike DelVecchio--great idea!)

9. cc gelatin filter assortment

10. jeweler's screwdrivers

11. mini-mag flashlight on lanyard neck strap

12. approved safety glasses with side shields and disposable foam
earplugs

13. policeman's whistle (to call for assistance should you fall down an
embankment)

14. light weight leather work gloves (for climbing)

15. lens cleaning tissue and lens cleaning brush (a blast of compressed,
canned air
can shatter the glass in a lens)

16. bean-bag camera support

17. small notebook and 2 pens

18. Sharpie-brand marking pen (writes on anything)

19. eyeglasses elastic strap (for those ocularly-challenged SPORRS
members)

20. flat-folded paper towels and packets of moist towelettes (besides
obvious hand
cleaning usage, to clean wounds, remove dirt from eyes, etc.)

You will note that some of these things are safety items required by the
railroads for employees who are working on railroad property. Got any
others to add to my list?
