Don't know what everyone else uses it for, but I have used it to pull a
branch into or out of a picture -- saving doing any permanent damage
with my saw.  (You can get camo-colored cord, which would still be 
hard to spot if it accidentally got into a picture.)

Basically it can be used to tie together most anything -- and even used
as emergency boot laces, if needed.


On the subject of boots:  My location boots not only have the steel toes
required for for many industrial situations but also have a so-called
"spike plate" in the sole which resists penetration if you happen to 
accidentally step on a sharp object.

Interesting lists, by the way.  I have/use virtually all the items listed,
though some are in the car, not in the camera bag.
