Eastman Kodak Company

New 200-Speed Color Slide Film Features Fine Grain, Approaches 100-Speed Performance

New Kodak Elite Chrome 200 Film Provides Excellent Detail In A Wide Range Of Conditions

NEW ORLEANS, Feb. 12 (SPRING PMA '98)—Photo enthusiasts who like the dramatic impact of projected slides can capture excellent detail in both shadow and highlights using new Kodak Elite chrome 200 film.

Elite chrome 200 film has the finest grain of any 200-speed daylight color reversal product. As a result, Eastman Kodak Company's newest transparency film is ideal for use by photo enthusiasts who want to capture pictures in a wide range of conditions.

The new 200-speed film replaces Kodak Ektachrome Elite II 200 film, and is part of Kodak's new family of Elite chrome films. The family will also include two former Kodak Ektachrome Elite II films. The recently improved 100-speed film features rich, saturated colors—and the 400-speed film.

"The outstanding characteristic of pictures from Elite chrome 200 film is that they look like they're shot with a 100-speed film," said Pierre Cohade, vice president and general manager, consumer film business, Consumer Imaging division, Kodak. "Photographers get fine grain with high-quality color, as well as the ability to capture pictures in situations with lower light and more action than a 100-speed film allows."

Picture-Taking Benefits

Like its predecessor, Elite chrome 200 film is a true 200-speed product that makes it Kodak's best all-around color slide film for use in general lighting conditions. It provides a range of benefits for different picture-taking needs.

The new film makes it easier for photographers to take pictures in lower light conditions, such as in late afternoon or on overcast days, compared to lower speed films. In brighter light, Elite chrome 200 film captures increased depth of field, and can produce excellent stop-action shots from sporting events and other moving subjects.

The technology used to design Elite chrome 200 film provides users with better detail from highlights to shadows, rendering pictures with greater depth and dimension. With the film's superb reciprocity characteristics, photographers also get excellent pictures from a range of light conditions—from bright sun to long exposures with a tripod.

"Whether taking pictures at sunset or a water-skier on a lake, photo enthusiasts can use Elite chrome 200 film to help capture those special shots more easily. We believe these characteristics will cause many photographers, including those who don't typically use a 200-speed product, to use this exceptional new film. The improvement over its predecessor is that remarkable," Cohade said.

New Film Formula

Using Kodak T-grain emulsion technology in all three color records—cyan, magenta and yellow—Kodak engineers formulated the new film to incorporate the fine grain of a 100-speed film at 200-speed. The film's structure includes cyan and magenta records that are triple-coated with fast, mid and slow layers.

The excellent reciprocity of the new film is possible through precision-controlled dopant technology, an emulsion additive that enables the film to perform over a broad range of lighting conditions without the need to correct for color balance. As a result, photographers can expect consistent color and overall image quality shooting Elite chrome 200 film at shutter speeds from 1/10,000th of a second to 10 seconds.

In addition, Kodak is using a new solid-particle, yellow filter dye between the yellow and magenta records of Elite chrome 200 film to contribute to bright colors and natural skin tones.

New Elite chrome 200 film is built with similar technology as Kodak E200 film, which the Kodak Professional division announced in October 1997. E200 is optimized for push-processing performance, and can be shot at speeds of up to 1000.

Family Of Elite Chrome Films

With its family of Elite chrome films, Kodak offers three unique products to meet different picture-taking needs. Besides the new 200-speed film, the family includes:

  • Kodak Elite chrome 100 film—recognized for vivid colors and excellent image structure. This 100-speed film offers rich, saturated colors, along with excellent skin-tone renditions. Since its introduction in 1996, Elite chrome 100 film has been further improved for even better skin-tone and neutral scale rendition.

  • Kodak Elite chrome 400 film—provides high speed in order to capture pictures in low light or in fast-action environments. This film is the same formula as Kodak Ektachrome Elite II 400 film, renamed for easier identification.

Kodak Select Sub-Brand

All of the Elite chrome films will be part of the Kodak Select series, which Kodak announced for photo enthusiasts.

Photographers who choose Elite chrome films and other products in the new Kodak Select series of films will find new conveniences in redesigned packaging. With the changes, users can:

  • Easily identify film in the Kodak Select series by the special color-coded film boxes and cartridges; Kodak Elite chrome films are color-coded blue.

  • Write notes about conditions, subjects or locations on a white patch on the film cartridge and on the top of the canister.

  • See the information on the film magazine through new translucent plastic canisters.

Availability

Kodak Elite chrome 200 film will be available for shipment in the second quarter of 1998 in 24- and 36-exposure rolls worldwide.
