Dieter's post reminds me of something I learned from being on so many wildfires with USFS and California Department of Forestry personnel.
When you are chasing trains in a particular area for more than a day or so, it's quite helpful to carry a roll of SURVEYOR'S TAPE in your camera bag. This is plastic, non-adhesive stuff that you can buy at any hardware store, comes in a bunch of bright colors and costs a couple bucks a roll. Found a particular access road that you think you'll need to return to in a hurry (in the heat of the chase)? Tie a 4' long streamer of surveyor's tape to a tree, street sign or other landmark to mark the turnoff. This is a MUST DO when you are scouting locations, etc., and want to make sure you find your way in again. Last year some guys and I were shooting semaphores on the west end of MRL. Some are visible from the various highways in western Montana; many or not. We put orange streamers at all the access points and parking locations, and removed them when we were finished. --DRB -> SPORRS: Serious Photographers of Railroad Related Subjects -> Web Site: http://www.anet-stl.com/acphotog/sporrs -> Message © SPORRS® 1998 - All Rights Reserved
