Several quick comments on guns and clothing:
I have my share of guns but I never taken them trackside. I figure
if the location is that dangerous I'd skip the shot. This practice has
left vast tracks of the East St. Louis rail scene unphotographed by me.
In marginal areas my deterrant of choice is either my Boxer or
Rottweiler. Besides the look and size of the dog they are always first
to spot/smell someone walking up on me.
Speaking of guns we should all be sensitive to the local hunting
season in our railfan trips. Having grown up in northwestern Wisconsin
I would never think of leaving the house with out blaze orange on in
late fall, especially during deer season. In those cases it also
important to be respective of other people using the same railraod right
of way for deer hunting. You wouldn't want some hunter to stand in the
middle of your photo shot (unless it part of your composition) so don't
go stumbling around screwing up their hunt.
