Doesn't matter if your meter conks out or you drop it off a cliff -- it
can't hurt to send it to Essex Camera Service in New Jersey for a free
repair estimate. All it will cost you is shipping; they return it at no
cost if you decline their estimate.
Best way to ship is via UPS. 

I've sent them cameras with minor and major damage, and every time they
fixed it like new. Average SLR repair is $65-110. I know Essex advertises
in Shutterbug, as do a lot of other repair shops, but my local pro camera
store told me this is where they send their customer's stuff for repairs,
so they have to be very good.
