Salt Lake IS a great place to do this. On my first trip to Essex several
years ago, I mentioned to Busse that there could be a 9 hour layover designed
into my plane change at Salt Lake. He had a freebie rent car coupon that was
fixin to expire. A couple of days later I had a freebie rent car coupon in my
mailbox.

Got off the plane and got the rent truck (a midweek upgrade to a new Blazer
was 10 bucks!) Headed southeast at a very high rate of speed, and got to
Lynn, UT just as the Utah RR train to Provo was getting on the main (which
was the point of this whole exercise). Had a great chase over Soldier Summit
(where he met the empty train) and on into Provo. Shot 7 rolls of film and
every shot was acceptable and a couple were pretty damn good.

Made it back to the airport with about 25 minutes to spare--just enough to
meet up with the rest of the group and grab a beer and a slice of pizza. A
great start to what turned out to be a great trip!
