Recently a couple of people asked about obtaining (purchasing) prints of some of the SPORRS site shots for their own personal use (wall hanging). It is up to the individual photographers how they want to conduct any sales or use of their own images. Personally, I am happy to provide prints of any of my shots to other SPORRS members for little more than the cost of the print, however, any commercial use of my own images such as calendars, books, magazines, etc. where the product is sold for money, would require additional agreements and fees. If anyone objects to me passing along your name and address to those interested in contacting you about purchasing your own photography, please let me know. How do you guys feel about this? Obviously, any financial arrangements and sales would have to be dealt with off of the list as private matters, but I have no objection to discussing this topic on the SPORRS list. Example: In my case, I sell Cibachrome prints of any of my slides to those who want them. If it is for a picture to hang on the wall, I also give them the option of providing it matted and also framed if they want it that way (obviously costs more - I have my own bevel mat cutter though). For wall hanging art, I charge much less for a print than if the shot were to be used for publication (distribution), and I sell wall art with the understanding that it is not to be copied or reproduced, because it is sold for private display in the home or office, and the simple usage rights granted with the shot reflect just that. For publication use, I sell only usage rights to the image, with the terms and fees to be agreed upon with the customer beforehand. If my image is to be used in any publication that is distributed and sold for money, then I am to be compensated as a photographer too (that is why you don't see my shots very often in railfan magazines, calendars and books). Let's not start a debate here, this post is about if you guys want to have me provide your contact info to anyone who is interested in buying your photography. You are to work out the terms yourselves, but I can point out guidelines if asked. I can also have Cibachromes made from slides for you if you specifically want me too. One suggestion for SPORRS members buying other SPORRS members photography would be to pay the photographer for printing two prints, so they can have one too. Trades are also good ideas if it works out this way (many of us do it with slides already anyway). If you guys want to charge differently or more than that, then it's up to you. I would suggest that you provide at least the simplest of usage rights terms to the purchaser to be proper. I get occasional E-mail from non-SPORRS members praising the quality of the RR photography on the SPORRS site. Looking at my records, I see that some of them eventually become SPORRS members too.
