I recently picked up a few rolls of E200 and, using a tip from
Popular Photography, have been merrily shooting it at ASA 800. The
PopPho recommendation was to shoot at 800 and have the lab push it three
stops (800 is only two stops above 200), but I found out that Kodak will
only push two stops and the custom labs want $35 a roll to push three
stops. Pushing only two stops has given good results, however.
Anyhow, I ran a comparison with K200 and pushed E200 and found that,
using a loupe, the grain is comparable, and E200 has nice rich colors. I
didn't try using E200 at the recommended 200 setting, since I am very
happy with K200 and I am looking for a film that will give me an
additional few stops. I anticipate using E200 in the future for nice
low-light sunset kid of stuff (or perhaps for use on dark and stormy
afternoons to get some trains-in-the-downpour shots) once I get all my
testing done.
By the way, the down side of E200 pushed to 800 is that Kodak wants
a $6.00 surcharge over the regular processing rates. This factor alone
will probably keep my E200 in the camera bag until lighting conditions
dictate that I can't use K200. I do have the luxury of multiple camera
bodies, so I don't have to constantly load and unload different films
depending on the light - it's just a matter of reaching into the bag for
the camera with the film best suited for the conditions I'm facing.
