This past weekend someone asked about the three best, but less known
rail spots. Here's my choices:

Hermann Missouri along the Sedalia Subdivision. This place is
located about half way between St. Louis and Jefferson City, Missouri on
the banks of the Missouri River. The area is scattered with small rural
towns which usually have riverside parks and numerous bluffs. These
offer the railfan a chance for either high perches to shot down on train
or nice scenic backdrops. The traffic is not what it once was your
still good for about 20-30 trains per day. 2 AMTRAKtrains each way,
numerous mixed freight and coal trains, run back and forth between the
second (Kansas City) and third (St. Louis) largest rail centers of the
U.S. Besides the scenery and train traffic it's a nice place to escape
St. Louis.

Alma, Wisconsin Home of the BNSF (ex-CB&Q) as it runs along the
east bank of the Mississippi River. Another small midwest town with
great river scenery and a lot of train traffic. There are several neat
locations to shot from with the best being a pedestrian foot bridge(
over the tracks) which allows access to the Corp of Engineer Lock and
Dam.

La Crosse to Wylusing State Park, Wisconsin: Similar to Alma since
it's on the same line, but only further south. More great train spots
with great river vista to shoot. This months CTC Board has a picture
from Wylusing State Park. Since the track runs basically North-South
(with sweeping curves and ready access to Highway 61 there's always a
reasonable lighting (late afternoon is best in the fall is best).

Winona to Wabasha, MN. Similar to Alma and the La Crosse area but
the track belongs to CP Rail (ex-Milwaukee Road and then Soo Line) and
runs on the west shore of the Mississippi River. Traffic isn't as heavy
as the BNSF on the other side of the river, but it's still respectable.
Winona also the regional DM&W (?) ex CNW yard plus trackage rights.

General Comments: I like river scenes, especially those that give you
opportunity to shoot down on the railroad. I also like small midwestern
towns. I need a place that has parks and places that my kids and dogs
can play around while I wait for "one" more train.
