In the Spokane area, I'd suggest at least a day in the Marshall,
Washington area, southwest of Spokane. See R&R a couple years back for a
good Bruce Kelly piece on Marshall. Nice scenery, easy access and pretty
fair amount of traffic on the ex-NP line to Pasco, as well as the
Palouse & Coulee City shortline. I have never chased the ex-GN main line
west of Spokane...

...and the Latah Creek viaduct on the west side of downtown is a
must-shoot on BNSF...you'll have a hard time missing it.

If you have the time, do explore the BNSF funnel east of Spokane into
Idaho and Montana. Go as far as Sandpoint if you can...scenery there is
top notch and it's easy to find the good spots, esp. if you like trains
and water! The DeLorme Idaho and Washington books are good area maps.

I would also suggest, if you have the time, a quick diversion east on
the interstate to the St. Regis, MT area on MRL. There are semaphores on
both sides of town, easy to get to and great photo angles all day in
that area. And it's a pretty interesting drive over there from Spokane.

If you're renting a car at GEG, remember the 15% tax they slap on
rentals and sometimes "forget" to tell you about...

...it's one of the cheapest places in the NW to rent Ford Explorers,
BTW.

Frankly, I can't think of much in Spokane worth seeing if you're not a
railfan.
