I was photographing trains at Houlihan's curve this past Saturday
(5/16). Although the fence is annoying, an acceptable vantage
point is still possible. The spot I always like is next to a
utility pole which is now at the fence line at the south west
corner of the big fence rectangle.

The other problem with shooting the curve is the trees growing
on the inside of the curve. This last time I used a 200mm
lens to get the rear of the train still visible. In the
summer if you use a 50mm lens much of the rear of train
is hidden by the trees. A number of years ago a railfan
I bumped into said he used a saw to cut down some of those
trees.

I have personally experienced the chiggers. Many times
while standing at the curve for several hours those chiggers
do their thing without your knowledge. Then the next day your
ankles, etc are covered with dozens of chigger bites.

As railfans we need to respect people's private property.
At the bridge over the tracks at MP136 so many railfans
parked their cars on the bridge, now signs are posted
prohibiting parking on the bridge. Unfortunately, when an
area like Edelstein Hill gets popular with railfans, our
presence becomes increasingly resented.
